The national congresses of internal medicine in Cuba take place every 4 years gathering around 400 participants, 75% of which are Cuban internists and specialists. In 2013 Cuba held the XXIII Congress of Internal Medicine of Central America and the Caribbean.

In this edition, the Internists will meet with the purpose of exchanging experiences and updating knowledge in various fields of the specialty, from the defense of the integrated clinical approach to the emerging new technologies, to the prevention and promotion of health, the risk approach, the social determinants of health and the ethical and humanistic content that our times demand.

The growing population of patients with poly-pathology requires the integrative action of the internist doctor as a medical coordinator of health actions. Cuba has promoted research with this vision in the last two congresses of AMICAC (Association of Internal Medicine of Central America and the Caribbean).
